Pin Parvati Pass Trek
The crossover expedition that links green Parvati Valley to the cold desert of Spiti over a 5,319 m glaciated pass.
Very Difficult
The most dramatic short crossover in the Indian Himalaya: green Kullu on one side, the grey desert of Lahaul on the other.
Hampta Pass is the trek people talk about when they want the biggest possible change of scenery in the shortest possible time. In roughly 26 km of walking you leave the pine and maple forests of the Kullu Valley, cross a 4,287 m notch in the Pir Panjal range, and land in the bare grey moonscape of Lahaul on the other side.
Everything about the trail is compressed and vivid. Day one walks through forest into the wide meadows of Chika. Day two follows the Rani Nala across icy river crossings to the wildflower fields of Jwara. Day three camps in the boulder-strewn glacial bowl of Balu Ka Ghera under Deo Tibba and Indrasan. Day four is the pass itself and a steep descent to Shea Goru. Day five walks out to the road at Chhatru.
It is graded moderate and is a genuinely good first high-altitude pass crossing for a fit beginner. Most groups extend the drive out with a visit to Chandratal Lake when the road is open.

A wide grassy campsite beside the Rani Nala, ringed by waterfalls coming off the Dhauladhar.
Barefoot crossings of the Rani Nala on the way to Jwara — cold, short and one of the most memorable bits of the trek.
In mid-July and August this stretch turns into a full carpet of Himalayan wildflowers.
A U-shaped glacial valley of boulders and glacial streams, right beneath Deo Tibba and Indrasan.
A narrow ridge with two completely different worlds on either side — green Kullu behind, grey Lahaul ahead.
When the road is open, the drive out from Chhatru includes the crescent-shaped Chandratal Lake at 4,300 m.

June to September. Mid-July to the end of August is the most popular window because the meadows are green and full of wildflowers. The trail can stay open into October but is less enjoyable.
The drive out from Chhatru passes Chandratal, and we include the detour whenever the road and snow conditions allow. It cannot be guaranteed because the road is weather-dependent.
Yes, if you are genuinely fit. You should be able to jog 4–5 km in about 30 minutes before departure. It is one of the better first high-altitude passes in India.
